Square allows you to accept credit card payments for your band’s merch using your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Nexus One or Droid mobile phone.
Being asked “Do you take credit cards?” is always a bit of a kick in the teeth when selling merch at shows – you know you are leaving money on the table by not being able to take credit card payments. Cash has always been the traditional payment method for t-shirts and CD’s at gigs but fans often don’t have enough cash with them for multiple purchases or high-ticket items.
You want to be able to take credit cards but credit card ‘merchant’ account fees and the cost of portable credit card readers have been out of reach for most bands – until now.
Square is the brainchild of Jack Dorsey, the cofounder and chairman of Twitter. The band Spoon has been using Square to sell merchandise on the road already and other artist management companies and labels are interested in the technology, according to Dorsey.
